A Farewell Concert

Zack LOVES Guns N' Roses. Loves them. Like Slash was sort of his idol. So when he saw that they were coming to Melbourne (unfortunately without Slash), he just had to go. So he bought the tickets as soon as they went on sale, and we had to plan our Australian leave date around this concert. But it was a fun show, and we had a good time listening to the classic songs.

ZZ Top was the opening act, so that was pretty fun as well. I didn't realize how many songs I actually knew by them ("Legs," "Sharp Dressed Man,""Gimme All Your Lovin'," etc.).

So Zack finally got to fulfill his dream of seeing Guns N' Roses in concert, only days before we left Australia. I think the smile on his face shows that it was worth staying for!

Happy husband living out a childhood dream.
Guns N' Roses put on a great show. Axl Rose was still quite the rock star for being over fifty years old.

Late Night at the Espy

On Saturday night, we met up with one of Zack's former coworkers and his wife to see a concert. It was held at the Esplanade Hotel, or the Espy for short, an iconic live music venue in St Kilda. There were three tribute bands in the show.

The first one was Creedence Clearwater Revival...

The next one was The Rolling Stones...

And the final one of the night was The Doors...
I probably liked the CCR tribute band the best, because I knew most of those songs, but they were all pretty fun. The band members dressed and acted like the real musicians they were trying to mimic, and Zack said they did a good job of it (I don't know much about the The Rolling Stones or The Doors, but Zack does). We stayed there past 1am, which is pretty much unheard of for us. We are usually in bed before 11pm, even on the weekends! Here's a picture as proof that I can still stay up past midnight at my old age. :) Hopefully you all had a fun weekend too!

Big Day Out

On Sunday, January 29, we went to Big Day Out, a yearly concert held in major Australian cities. The headliner was Kanye West, and he put on quite a production at the end of the night, but we enjoyed some of the daytime performances better. I liked seeing Kimbra again (we had first seen her at the Falls Fest in Tasmania).

There were several color-coded stages set up all around the Flemington Racecourse, but here is a picture of one of the main ones (the orange one) when My Chemical Romance was playing. The blue one was right next to it, so once one band was done playing, another could start right away. Along with the other smaller stages, you had plenty of choices for music all day long.
When you got tired of listening to music, you could check out some of the shopping booths, carnival rides, or skate ramp action. Here is the famous Tony Hawk showing off some awesome tricks!
Soundgarden was another major act at the show, and here is a picture of them playing. We left their set early to go check out the band called Foster the People, who are known for their song called "Pumped Up Kicks." Zack has since gotten their whole album, and we like all of their songs!

Big Day Out was a hot, tiring way to spend a Sunday, but we enjoyed the music and experiencing this Melbourne tradition in its 20th year.
